EHRN Timeline

  • 1997

    Central and Eastern European Harm Reduction Network (CEEHRN) was founded. A founding meeting took place in Warsaw, Poland, where the Steering Committee of 9 members was elected. Dr Judit Honti (United Kingdom) became the first Coordinator of the Network (1997-2000).

  • 2000

    A new Steering Committee was elected for the period of two years. Dr Emilis Subata (Lithuania) became a new Coordinator of the Network.

  • 2001

    The Steering Committee together with the founders Dr Emilis Subata and Ingrida Šulcienė established a Secretariat, which runs technical and administrative activities of the Network. Raminta Štuikytė became the first Executive Director of CEEHRN Secretariat.

  • 2003

    CEEHRN became a sub-regional office of the International Council of AIDS Service Organizations (ICASO).

  • 2004

    WHO Harm Reduction Knowledge Hub was established. It offers trainings, technical assistance, development and adaptation of training materials and tools to respond to the needs of harm reduction programs in our region.

  • 2005

    CEEHRN Secretariat was granted a Special Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC).

  • 2007

    CEEHRN changed its name to the Eurasian Harm Reduction Network (EHRN) in order to reflect its work in Central Asia.

  • 2008

    EHRN became the host of Civil Society Action Team (CSAT) initiative for Eastern Europe and Central Asia mobilizing and engaging civil society in the processes and programs of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria (the Global Fund).

  • 2008

    Seats in the Steering Committee were allocated for representatives of the community of people who use drugs.

  • 2009

    Asta Minkevičienė became Executive Director of EHRN Secretariat.

  • 2010

    David Otiashvili (Georgia) became the Chairperson of Steering Committee.

  • 2011

    Sergey Votyagov became Executive Director of EHRN Secretariat.

  • 2012

    EHRN and Eurasian Network of people who use drugs (ENPUD) signed a Memorandum of Understanding and EHRN’s Secretariat became an acting Secretariat of ENPUD until the end of 2014.

  • 2012

    Memorandum of Understanding was signed between EHRN and the Global Fund Board Delegation of Communities Living with HIV, Tuberculosis and Affected by Malaria.

  • 2012

    Arian Boci (Albania) took over the position of the Chairperson of Steering Committee.

  • 2013

    23rd International Harm Reduction Conference was held in Vilnius, Lithuania.

  • 2014

    EHRN was awarded the first EECA regional grant for HIV and harm reduction from the Global Fund for the period of 2014-2017.

  • 2014

    Nino Tsereteli (Georgia) and Peter Sarosi (Hungary) were elected as Co-chairs of the EHRN Steering Committee.
