The new Global Fund Strategy for 2017–2021 – get involved!

Early in 2015, the Global Fund started the process of developing its new Strategy. Learn more about how you can get involved!

Since 2002, the programs supported by the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria have been vital in scaling up HIV and TB prevention and treatment programs for the key affected populations in Eastern Europe and Central Asia (EECA).

By the end of 2012, the total Global Fund investment into the EECA region amounted to $1,845,179,080, and in 2014, as part of the New Funding Model, the Global Fund allocated another $688.5 million to the programs in Eastern Europe and Central Asia for the period till the end of 2017.

Without the Global Fund programs, the consequences of the HIV epidemic in our region would be catastrophic.

Earlier this year, the Global Fund started a process to develop a new Strategy for 2017–2021. This new Strategy is expected to be adopted by the Board of the Global Fund in spring 2016.

As the development is underway, various multilateral consultations, meetings, forums and dialogues are held at the regional and national levels to help shape the new Strategy, its content, aims and objectives, which is a good opportunity for meaningful involvement of the civil society and key affected communities.

It’s no secret that the New Funding Model reduces available funding for middle-income countries and focuses on supporting low-income countries. As a result, the total funding for the EECA region has already declined by 15% compared to the previous three-year period.

Therefore, if we want to change the situation and make sure that from 2017 the new strategic agenda of the Global Fund involves objectives that are essential for our region, such as planning for the responsible transition to domestic funding, ensuring program sustainability, community systems strengthening, human rights-based health care, etc., we should act now and help the Global Fund define its strategic direction with account to our interests.
